Dawn at the Downs: Your chance to get up and close…

With the contenders for the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby.

Each year, Churchill Downs opens the track early in the morning so fans can watch the horses work out. During Derby week, the horses that will run in the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks workout in the morning from 6:45am to 10am.

Previously, there two sessions, an early morning one during the 7:00am hour and a later session during the 9:00 hour. This year, there was only one announced time, and that was the morning session.

This free event, lets you get to the rail, see the horses, talk with their escorts, and enjoy the track atmosphere.

In addition, each year, they have two days with a breakfast buffet on Millionaires Row, where a track expert explains what’s going on at the track and discusses the horses.

This year, Dawn at the Downs runs from Thursday, April 24th to Wednesday, May 1. The breakfast sessions were Sunday, April 27, and Monday April 28.

In the photos below, the yellow blankets indicate Derby contenders, where pink blankets indicate Oaks contenders. The other horses are running in other races this week or on Oaks or Derby day.
