Burnham Square claimes the 2025 Blue Grass Stakes

Spring weather in Central Kentucky can be unpredictable. Severe flooding across much of the Midwest after days of severe storms postponed the 101st Running of the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes from Saturday, April 5th, until Tuesday, April 8th, in frigid temperatures.

But the clear Kentucky skies made for an enjoyable day at Keenland in Lexington. Seven horses paraded in front of the crowd before they paraded back to the starting gate near the entrance to the track from the paddock. The race, a mile and an eighth, is one of the main prep races for the Kentucky Derby. In recent years, the Derby field has been selected by an accumulated number of points from various prep races. Today’s winner, Burnham Square, came from behind to nudge out East Avenue and earn 100 Road To The Kentucky Derby Points. East Avenue collected 50 points.

Burnham Square, trained by Ian R. Wilkes, was ridden to victory by Brian J. Hernandez Jr.
