Dawn at the Downs is a chance to get up close to the Derby contenders and watch them work out. Churchill Downs hosts this event the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday before the Kentucky Derby as a free event. Show up at Gate 10, walk in and up to the rail. Bring your coffee and breakfast and make a morning of it. In addition, if you wish, you can purchase a breakfast buffet on Millionaire’s Row where a track expert puts on a presentation about what’s happening on the track and what to look for. You can watch the workout from the Fourth Floor suite or go down to the rail. Gates open at 7am. The Derby and Oaks contenders take the track at 8:30, though some work out during the workout time for the other horses.
While you’re there, you can also visit the Kentucky Derby Museum. The Museum includes a walking tour of Churchill Downs where you can learn interesting facts about the history of the Derby and Churchill Downs. Did you know only three fillies (female horses) have ever won the Kentucky Derby? There are many displays in the museum and an incredible 360º 4K video screen that plays a great video about the Derby. The basic tour is $15 per person.
