When you travel frequently, there is safety in chain restaurants. You generally know what you’re going to get. But where is the fun in that? In general I try to find dining spots that show the character of the community, has a taste of flavor for the area or simply a good old “hole-in-the-wall” dive. It’s these places where you can’t find a log of character and some of the best food.
That said, there are three regional chain restaurants that are on our must-visit list: White Castle, Moby Dicks and Skyline Chili. These were favorites when we lived in Louisville that we can’t find elsewhere.
Then we try to make it to a great pizzeria called Impellizzeris. This restaurant is situated in a hip, urban area of town where there is plenty of unique shops and nightlife.
But on this visit, we found one of those hole-in-the-walls: Ann Marie’s Bacon Bar. This restaurant, tucked away on Taylorsville Road in Jeffersontown has bacon in just about every item is serves from the obvious bacon cheese fries and bacon cheese burger to the Bourbon Bacon Brownie. The brownie has bacon mixed in and glazed with a bourbon-caramel glaze and topped with powdered sugar and whipped cream.
This was an interesting find that we would visit again if nothing else to explore their other unique menu items including, yes, vanilla ice cream and bacon!!! (with chocolate chips!)
